A five-year visa comes with a piece of arithmetic almost nobody thinks about when filing: your passport will almost certainly run out before the visa does — by date or by pages. And a DTV lives in the passport it was issued in; it doesn’t move to a new one. Out of this rule grew a surprisingly hardy myth: “my passport is nearly finished, so first I replace the passport, then I apply.” Let’s take apart why you should do exactly the opposite.
What happens to the visa when the passport runs out
Nothing: the visa doesn’t burn with the passport. On replacement the old passport is mechanically cancelled, but it stays in your hands — together with the live visa inside it. From then on you travel with two documents: the new passport for entry, the old one for the visa. At the border you show both.
This isn’t a life hack or a grey area — it’s a standard, widespread, legal arrangement: thousands of long-visa holders around the world live this way. There are exactly two practical quirks:
- automatic gates don’t work with two passports — you go through an officer, which costs a couple of extra minutes;
- an officer sometimes needs an extra second to see the pairing — simply hand over both passports together.
Why waiting for the new passport is a bad idea
Because replacing a passport, especially from abroad, means months in a queue. And all that time two counters are running:
- 1.You are not living in Thailand on your own terms — though you could be: a visa obtained today lives in the passport it was issued in, however many passports you go through afterwards. One caveat: some posts issue the DTV not for the full five years but until the passport expires (Brussels does this) — if your passport has less than two or three years left, work out which is better: filing now or renewing the passport first.
- 2.Rules change faster than queues move. Colombo died in a single day, Jakarta — over a quarter. The window that’s open for your profile today may look different in six months. Postponing the filing for the sake of a “clean” passport means trading a real visa now for a lottery later.
Under the general rules, six months of passport validity is enough to file, but some posts want more: Rome issues the DTV only as a multiple-entry visa and asks for a passport valid for at least a year — check your consulate’s requirement on the board before paying the fee. That is enough to get the visa now — and sort out the passport replacement afterwards, in the ordinary course of things.
Where the real mistake happens
Not where everyone fears it. Filing with an old passport is normal; the people who really get it wrong are the ones who put off the replacement until the last day. Questions like “how do I fly while the new passport is in production” and “what do I show at the border in the transition period” are settled calmly if you get to them in advance — and nervously if you are already at the airport.
So a passport running out is not a reason to postpone the DTV — it’s a reason to plan the sequence.
