The DTV has a rule almost nobody thinks about when filing: the visa lives in the passport it was issued in, and it doesn’t move to a new passport. With a five-year visa that rule catches up with nearly everyone — passports run out both by date and by pages.
A harmful myth has grown around it: “my passport is nearly finished, so first I replace the passport, then I apply for the DTV.” Here’s why that isn’t so.
The two-passport arrangement is standard
The visa doesn’t die with the passport. When the passport is replaced, the old one is physically cancelled but stays in your hands — together with the live visa inside it. From then on you travel with two documents: the new passport for entry, the old one for the visa. At the border you show both.
This isn’t a life hack or a grey area — it’s a normal, widespread, legal arrangement used by thousands of long-visa holders around the world. There are exactly two practical quirks:
- automatic gates don’t work with two passports — you go through an officer, which costs a couple of extra minutes;
- an officer sometimes needs a second longer to see the pairing — you simply hand over both passports together.
Why waiting for the new passport is a bad idea
Replacing a passport, especially from abroad, means months of waiting. And during all that time two things are happening:
- 1.You’re not living in Thailand on your own terms — though you could be: a visa obtained today works for all five years, no matter how many times your passport changes along the way.
- 2.Rules change faster than queues move. Colombo died in a single day, Jakarta over a quarter. The window that’s open for your profile today may look different in six months. Postponing the filing for the sake of a “clean” passport means trading a real visa now for a lottery ticket later.
Formally, six months of passport validity is enough to file — enough to get the visa now and deal with the passport afterwards, in the ordinary course of things.
The one real mistake
It isn’t “filing with an old passport” — it’s putting off the replacement until the last day. Questions like “how do I fly while the new passport is being produced” and “what do I show at the border in the meantime” are settled calmly if you get to them early, and frantically if you get to them at the airport.
