On 26 July the Telegram news channel Baza reported — and Russian media spread it within a day — that Thailand is tightening control over the DTV. What gets checked is movement history, with special attention to those who never left Thailand. The stakes: visa cancellation, and in serious cases deportation and an entry ban. Let’s say it straight away: there is no sensation here. Of all possible checks, this is the most logical one. Here is how the “no-travel filing” scheme works, why it was doomed from day one — and how to file properly.
What a “no-travel filing” is
A “no-travel filing” is a middleman service for people already in Thailand: you sit in Phuket while “applying in Vietnam”. It grew out of a hard rule: the DTV is filed online, but at the moment of filing you must be in the consulate’s country — applying from inside Thailand is not allowed. And you cannot simply stay quiet about it: the consulate requires proof of location — the document package includes the page of your passport with the entry stamp of the country of application.
The stamp your passport doesn’t have, the middleman simply draws. The filing is impossible without it, so forged stamps — an “exit” from Thailand and an “entry” into Vietnam — are part of the service not occasionally but every single time. On top of that, the chats openly offer to photoshop your photos: to “confirm” you are where you are not.
Let’s call things by their name: this is forgery of passport stamps, sent to a consulate in your name. And it takes a minute to check — the moment your passport lands in an officer’s hands.
Why one look at your passport gives it away
Because location is the one field of a visa application that checks out in seconds. Most other fields can’t be verified quickly; this one is the exception. The consulate received a page with a Vietnamese “entry” stamp — while the passport the border officer is holding has no such stamp and never did. The officer can leaf through the pages himself, or simply say: “Show me your stamps”.
This is not a forecast for the future: checks at the Thai border are happening already — people get taken to a side room and asked to show their documents one by one.
Hiding behind a passport renewal won’t work. The DTV lives in the passport it was filed on and does not transfer to a new one — you travel with the old passport for all five years of the visa. Which means the passport that is supposed to carry that stamp is always with you — and always in the officer’s hands.
Then there is the digital trail. Every entry and exit already lands in the immigration database, and Phuket is right now installing a second row of automated gates at departures: crossings are recorded by passport chip and face recognition. The stamp is no longer needed — the database record has full legal force. Since June the gates have been open to holders of Russian ten-year passports, among others.
The date of every border crossing sits in one database; the date and country of the application sit in another. To see the full picture for every DTV holder, the two only need joining once. Judging by the news, that is exactly where this is heading.
The outcome of such a check is predictable: document forgery means deportation and a ban, no discussion. And it won’t be the middleman who “arranged everything” answering for it — it will be the passport’s owner.
How to file the right way
The boring truth: actually travel to the country of application. Most consulates accepting DTV applications sit in countries that are easy to reach visa-free or on a quick e-visa. The decision takes two to three weeks on average — and you can spend them right there: Vietnam, Laos, Kazakhstan, Turkey are worth the trip in their own right. And some consulates also call applicants in for an in-person interview — being nearby helps.
