How filing works
Fully electronic: the application goes through the e-visa system, the $400 fee is paid online, and there is no interview. You don’t need to be physically present in Astana — a decision takes a couple of weeks on average, though in individual cases it has come back anywhere from a few hours to a month.
The key condition — a connection to Kazakhstan
The consulate doesn’t take citizens only: residents get through as well, on a residence permit, a work contract or other documents that tie them to the jurisdiction. But the connection has to be documentary: simply flying in and filing won’t work. Which documents the consulate counts as a sufficient connection is a matter of interpretation, and that interpretation has shifted; we track it continuously.
Passport details
- The general rule applies: six months of passport validity is enough (the “passport older than 5 years” requirement in force here in 2025 was dropped in the summer of that year). The practical margin is 1.5–2 years: the visa is issued for 5 years and is not transferred into a new passport;
- with a passport running out, applicants travel with two: the old one with the visa is cancelled mechanically and stays in their hands.
What we track here
How “a connection to Kazakhstan” is read, whether payments clear with different cards, and decision times — which swing more here than the description of the procedure suggests.
