Who can file here from 31 August 2026
Cambodian citizens and holders of a Cambodian residence permit. The rule is written into the e-visa form and works the same at every Thai consulate: the application is taken by the country of citizenship or permanent residence. If you do not live in Cambodia, this is not your consulate. Which one is, you can see on the map.
How filing works
On paper it is simple: an online application, a $400 fee, no interview. In practice applications barely move — no new approvals have appeared in our chronicle since the start of 2026, which is why we quote no decision time here.
The system-wide requirements apply here as everywhere:
- a police clearance certificate — from the country of citizenship or the country of filing;
- three months of bank statements with a minimum balance of 500,000 ฿ per applicant, children included; for the main applicant a sponsorship letter is the formal alternative;
- proof of status in Cambodia — citizenship or a residence permit.
How it worked before 31 August
Phnom Penh was never a strong route: refusals ran level with approvals at a $400 fee. The flow stopped for good after November 2025 — against the background of restrictions on visa runs through Cambodia and cooling Thai-Cambodian relations, the consulate effectively stopped approving applications.
The Cambodian route was popular for its closeness to Thailand: people already in the region came here to file. That logic ended twice over — first on the approval numbers alone, and from 31 August formally as well: arriving somewhere in order to file is no longer possible anywhere.
