Who can file here from 31 August 2026
Malaysian citizens and holders of a Malaysian residence permit. The rule is written into the e-visa form and is the same at every Thai consulate: the application is taken by the country of citizenship or permanent residence. If you do not live in Malaysia, this is not your consulate. Which one is, you can see on the map.
There are two more Thai consulates-general in the country, in Penang and Kota Bharu; most of the flow goes through the capital, but the circle of applicants there is the same.
How filing works
Filing is online and the fee is around $300 — officially 1,600 ringgit. An interview is not always scheduled, but it should not be ruled out: the questions cover duties, income, which city, and whether accommodation has been rented. Timelines are the most uneven part of this route: from a few weeks to a month and a half or two, and past cases are a poor guide to them.
The document package:
- a police clearance certificate — from the country of citizenship or the country of filing;
- three months of bank statements with a minimum balance of 500,000 ฿ per applicant, children included; for the main applicant a sponsorship letter is the formal alternative;
- a Thai accommodation contract for at least six months — the signature document request of this consulate, asked for together with every page of the passport.
How it worked before 31 August
The flow of applications through Kuala Lumpur in our base was small, and our conclusions from it were always careful: the picture never looked even, which is why the board carried this consulate as “risk” rather than “open”. The recurring observations were a request for a rental agreement, a wide spread of timelines, and an even thinner flow through Penang and Kota Bharu, where there is less data still.
Back then this was one of the points where an applicant could arrive and file while staying in the country. Now the same tie to the country has become formal and hard: citizenship or a residence permit.
