Who can file here from 31 August 2026
Citizens and residents of Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay who are in one of those countries. The embassy says so plainly: citizens of the district who are outside it cannot file. For citizens the proof is the DNI, the national identity document, a driving licence, or a utility bill from the last month with a name and address on it. For foreign nationals, a residence card, temporary or permanent.
The embassy has not announced how Buenos Aires will read the new “permanent residence” requirement: its visa pages have not been updated since August 2025. Whether temporary residence will be accepted is something the first decisions this autumn will show.
The embassy’s page and the application form disagree
The embassy’s pages do not mention a criminal record certificate for the DTV, although the same post requires one for other visa categories. The e-Visa form has required it of everyone since 31 August, along with proof of permanent residence. We assemble the package for the form, not for the page.
The fee: cash only, and that changes the whole route
Filing goes through the portal, but the $400 fee is taken only in US dollars in cash, the exact amount, in person at the embassy on Vuelta de Obligado 1947. Paying by card online does not work here. That is what makes physical presence compulsory, whatever is written about a remote procedure. The fee is non-refundable, on refusal and on cancellation alike.
How filing works
- Timeline per the embassy site: five to ten working days, with some applications taking longer. File no earlier than three months and no later than a month before the trip.
- Finances: no less than 500,000 THB per person, a three-month statement or an official sponsorship letter. Sponsorship is allowed for everyone, not only for children.
- Dependants: a spouse and children under 20, plus a copy of the main applicant’s visa and a document proving the relationship.
- A document request left unanswered for 45 days cancels the application, with no notice and no refund of the fee.
- Rules for filling in the form: accented letters are entered without the accent, and hyphens, “N/A” and “X” are not put into empty fields. The embassy does not correct personal data after filing.
In our one case so far the decision from Buenos Aires came in three days.
The criminal record certificate
The Argentine certificate is issued by the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia, the national recidivism registry. The price scale runs on speed: five days for 1,000 pesos, twenty-four hours for 2,400, six hours for 4,800, one hour for 8,500. Two things the embassy site will not tell you about.
The first: by law the certificate is valid for five working days from the moment it is issued. The ninety days often written about are the window for downloading it and having it apostilled, not a validity period. You order the certificate to fit the filing, not in advance.
The second: a foreign national without an Argentine DNI can obtain the certificate only in person, by appointment and with fingerprints taken. There is no remote route. The registry works only directly and will have nothing to do with intermediaries.
The certificate is in Spanish, and filing needs an English translation. An apostille does not work for Thailand yet: the Convention enters into force there on 28 February 2027.
Yellow fever
Argentina and Paraguay are on Thailand’s official list of countries whose travellers must show an international yellow fever vaccination certificate on entry. The requirement follows the route, not the passport: the vaccination at least ten days before entry, the certificate submitted through the T8 form. A visa will not save you at the border without that certificate.
What else matters
For Argentines the 90-day visa-free regime under the bilateral agreement still applies after 15 September 2026. The DTV here is needed not to get in, but to live in Thailand longer without leaving every three months.
