Who can file here from 31 August 2026
Citizens and permanent residents of Brazil, Guyana and Suriname. Guyana and Suriname are assigned to Brasília, but the only case we know of from there — a Surinamese approved online in an hour and a quarter — came before the reform; there is no practice after 31 August, and we promise nothing for those countries.
What counts as permanent residence the post has not explained. A Brazilian citizen uses Brazilian documents; before the reform the standard document request was proof of address, so we keep a comprovante de residência ready. A foreign national uses the CRNM card, with the classification printed on the card itself: PERMANENTE for open-ended residents, TEMPORÁRIO for temporary ones. Whether the post will accept TEMPORÁRIO has not been announced.
The post announced the rule with a ministry image
On 1 September 2026 the embassy published an announcement with a Portuguese headline and, inside it, the standard Thai foreign ministry infographic in English and Thai: instead of a proof-of-location document, proof of permanent residence, plus a criminal record certificate; applications filed before 31 August go by the old rules. What counts as permanent residence, how recent the certificate has to be, whether a translation is needed — not a word. The post has no DTV page of its own; its visa page is four lines of “apply at thaievisa.go.th” dating from December 2024. There is no Portuguese version of the site.
How filing works
- Online through e-Visa only. There is no visa desk in São Paulo or Rio: the honorary consulate is closed and only the trade office remains. The consular section in Brasília works by appointment through consular.bra@mfa.go.th.
- The post does not publish the fee. The form’s benchmark is 10,000 THB, about R$ 1,540; one applicant wrote in August 2026 that “it costs 2k”, and whether that was the fee or the whole cost is unclear.
- The post does not publish a timeline either. In cases before 31 August, Brasília was one of the fastest posts in the world: 5 hours, an hour and a quarter, two days, three days, 14 days; we found no refusals. There are no filings completed since the reform.
- Finances: a three-month statement with a balance no lower than 500,000 THB, about R$ 76,900, or a sponsorship letter; CNPJ, MEI and IRPF papers are not required.
- Dependants: a spouse and children under 20; per the form they need the criminal record certificate too, and the post has announced no age exemption.

The criminal record certificate
The Brazilian certificate, the Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais da Polícia Federal, is free and instant: online, with no gov.br login, and for a foreign national on a passport or a CRNM. Three caveats. It comes in Portuguese only; no English version exists. It is valid for 90 days, not six months: we order it last. If your full namesake is in the database — homônimos — the site issues a protocol, you take it to a Federal Police office, and the certificate takes up to 15 days.
Whether a legalised certificate is needed for the DTV, where documents are uploaded as scans, the post has not clarified. If it does demand one, the chain is long and has to fit inside those 90 days: an Itamaraty stamp (in Brasília, Tuesdays and Thursdays, by appointment; we could not find the price), a sworn translation into English (the benchmark is R$ 95–132 per lauda, the standard translation page), an Itamaraty stamp on the translation, and then the Thai embassy in Brasília, in person only: R$ 90 for each foreign ministry stamp, paid by PIX. An apostille is useless for Thailand until 28 February 2027.
What else matters
Brazil, Guyana and Suriname are on Thailand’s yellow fever list: anyone flying from or through them needs an international vaccination certificate dated no later than ten days before entry; according to an account in a chat from July 2026, it was already being checked at boarding in São Paulo. Visa-free entry for Brazilians does not change on 15 September: it stays at 90 days under the bilateral agreement.

The first Brazilian case after 31 August: whether the post keeps its speed, whether it accepts a TEMPORÁRIO card, whether a scan of the certificate is enough without legalisation, how much it charges and in which currency, and whether a filing from Guyana or Suriname gets through.
