Who can file here from 31 August 2026
Residents of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg: German citizens with registration, and foreign nationals with a valid residence permit, the Aufenthaltserlaubnis, plus registration. Permanent residence is not required. The applicant is in Germany at the moment of filing and payment. The post’s page was updated on 27 August.
Where Munich is stricter than its neighbours
Three German posts read one rule three different ways, and Munich is the most demanding of them.
- The criminal record certificate has to be no older than three months, twice as strict as Frankfurt. The post does not name the issuing authority; in practice it is the Führungszeugnis.
- A portfolio is not accepted as grounds. What is needed is an employment contract stating in so many words that the employer permits remote work from Thailand, or, for a freelancer, a business registration, the Gewerbeanmeldung.
- A criminal record certificate is required of every dependant, with no age qualification. A spouse with no age limit, children under 20.
- For soft power the post asks for an extract from the Thai DBD register on the receiving organisation, and no other post does.
Munich is the only one of the German posts to have named a euro equivalent of the threshold, and the figure is too low: €12,500 at its own rate comes to less than 480,000 baht. Count from €13,100, with room for the exchange rate, or the package will trip over the arithmetic.
How filing works
- Everything online, through the e-Visa portal. The fee is €350, non-refundable.
- Timeline per the post’s site: 15 consular days, applications taken in the order they arrive. An interview is possible.
- Finances: no less than 500,000 THB; statements and payslips, Verdienstnachweise, are both accepted; no statement period is set, and we prepare three months.
- The name in Latin letters strictly as in the machine-readable zone of the passport.
Applicants report that a screenshot of a statement was accepted here, and that an application stuck on “pending approval” was moved along by a letter to the consulate. We have no reports under the new rules yet, so we quote no turnaround times and no statistics.
What else matters
An apostille does not work for Thailand yet: the Convention enters into force there on 28 February 2027. From 15 September 2026 visa-free entry for German citizens drops from 60 to 30 days.
